Flag Etiquette 101

A flag post service is an ideal fundraiser because, after the first year, you keep 100% of the profit. The service entails purchasing a set of flags and offering to install and uninstall them on national holidays for members of your community. Because you are handling flags for this fundraiser, it is important to understand and follow basic flag etiquette. After all, the flags are posted to celebrate our great nation, and commemorate war heroes and our independence. And more importantly, you want your fundraiser to honor that. Here are some helpful tips to ensure you and your group adhere to the U.S. flag code when displaying and stowing flags.

Flag Etiquette When Displaying the U.S. Flag

When you install the U.S. flag for either a posting service or a Flags for Honor event, you should abide by the following guidelines:

  • Place the U.S. Flag above all other flags when it is on a single staff.
  • The flag goes to the observer’s left when placed by other flags in a row.
  • The flag should be half-staff in times of national mourning. It is also common for it to be half-staff until noon and then raised on Memorial Day.
  • If the flag is placed over a street (like in front of a business), the union (stars) should face north or east. The direction is contingent on the direction of the street.

Flag Etiquette When Stowing the Flag

When you are stowing the flag, there are only two things you should know. The flag should be folded in a traditional triangle and should not be carelessly folded or crumpled. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) have an excellent guide that breaks down the correct technique. Secondly, the flag should be stored in a clean place where it cannot get dirty.

Special Guidelines to Consider

You should also consider the following guidelines when displaying or stowing your flag:

  • Do not let the flag touch the ground.
  • Do not alter or deface the flag, or fly the flag upside down.
  • Do not carry the flag flat, or carry things in it.
  • When installed, it would not be fastened or tied back but fall free.
  • The flag should be stowed during severe weather.
