Guidelines for a Proper American Flag Display

An American flag display is a fantastic way to fundraise while also bringing your community together. We want to share some additional tips so you can host a successful fundraiser and create a proper American flag display that your community will remember and participate in for years to come.

Form a Team to Plan a Proper Flag Display

If you are creating a flag display for the entire community or a Flags for Honor event, you should first take the time to set up a team to spearhead the fundraiser. Recruit members that have the time and skill to take on various aspects of the fundraiser. You should also allocate responsibilities according to their skills including sales, marketing, leadership, and event planning. Also, remember that someone should recruit and coordinate volunteers to set up the display on the day of the event.

Choose an Ideal Location and Time

Time and location can make or break an event. Try to choose a time where the weather is generally favorable for an outdoor display. We recommend late summer or early fall to avoid harsh conditions such as heavy rainstorms, excessive heat, or snow. You should also choose a location where the display can be appreciated by pedestrians such as parks, beaches, or trails. It can also double as a display that can be appreciated by those in vehicles if you research the locations near you well.

Additionally, make sure someone in your team is working with your city hall to coordinate the event since it will be a public space and secure permits if needed for your flag display. On the day of the event, be sure that all volunteers who are posting the flags are following flag etiquette.

How to Fundraise for an American Flag Display

Now that you have your team ready and a location picked, it's time to start advertising for donations. We recommend creating sponsorship packages at prices you and your team believe are fair. Sponsorship packages should differ in what they include. For example, a level 1 sponsorship package can include a flag posted with an Honor Medallion, and a level 2 sponsorship package can include the posted flag and honor medallion with an additional sponsor recognition on your website.

You will also need to organize how donations will be accepted. Plus, you should establish marketing campaigns to encourage donations. Also, consider sending a press release to the media concerning the event or advertising online or in your local newspaper.
